Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Parents, coaches, and caregivers are role models. They make sacrifices with their time and money to organize travel, pay for equipment, and put their whole heart into rooting for their kids.

More than just providing an opportunity for play, parents, coaches, and caregivers of elite level athletes create and model a lifestyle of fitness and athleticism. The parents are active with their kids, and not only promote the sport, but healthy life choices such as work ethic, heathy nutrition, cross-training, and proper sleep. They are a child’s inspiration that demonstrates to them the importance of hard work and commitment.

As a parent, you don’t have to be a former high-level athlete, or even play the game yourself, but you should enjoy watching the games, learn the lingo, and get involved. Watch YouTube highlight reels or Instagram videos. Set up and encourage drills around the house to build skills for strength or flexibility. Hang motivational posters and sports memorabilia.

A parent, coach, or caregiver can’t just be all talk. An athlete will see through it and be uninspired. However, if you’re willing to lead by example and work just as hard as you expect your athlete to, they will respond in kind. So please, don’t be afraid to get involved yourself.
